Analytical Chemistry Core Services

NYU Langone's Analytical Chemistry Core offers researchers access to advanced laboratories designed for metals and elemental analysis of exposed cells and tissues, as well as other biological and environmental samples.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer Laboratory

Established in 2016, this laboratory provides access to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

The PerkinElmer NexION® 350D system permits the detection of many experimentally, environmentally, and clinically significant metals and elements at extremely low levels relevant to human environmental exposures. It also has clinical, therapeutic, and pharmacological applications.

Our metals analysis services using ICP-MS are far superior to those that previously used atomic absorption spectrometry and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy.

X-ray Fluorescence Laboratory

This laboratory provides an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer (Thermo Scientific ARL QUANT’X EDXRF) using energy-dispersive (ED) analysis via a lithium-drifted silicon detector with an isotopic source of X-ray excitation. This allows all of the elements within a sample to be detected and measured simultaneously.

Sample-Preparation Clean Room

A Class 1,000 clean room, which has fewer than 1,000 particles measuring 0.5 µm or greater per cubic foot of air, is available for use as a sample-preparation laboratory for trace metals analysis.
