Dr. Loomis is a physician scientist who trained and practiced as a pediatric dermatologist and directed an NIH-funded research lab delineating genetic pathways important in embryonic limb and skin development. She now devotes much of her time to biomedical training and creating infrastructure critical for the transfer of bench research findings to clinical practice. She is a highly regarded teacher in both the basic sciences and Medical School, and she is winner of the coveted "best teaching faculty award" from Dermatology residents. Dr. Loomis has written numerous textbook articles in pediatric dermatology and has authored numerous chapters on skin development/genetics in dermatology and neonatology textbooks. She has been involved in the design and teaching of several "cross-over" courses to medical and graduate students. She is one of the creators and a central player in the Pathobiology Program and also serves as Director of the Research Histopathology Core and Course Director for the 1st year curriculum. Dr. Loomis oversees the curriculum and the graduate advisory team tracking and monitoring the progress of all students enrolled in the program and is personally involved in customizing the program for individual students.
